Why Garden Rooms Are Everywhere Right Now

Over the last few years, garden rooms have become increasingly popular - from a luxury add-on to a serious investment for many homeowners. With the price of homes continuing to increase, a garden room is an excellent way to add space and value to your home without the cost of moving or the hassle of an extension.

This blog explores why now might be the best time to invest in a garden room. If you want to find out more about how we build using timber frames, you can read more about that here.

What Can a Garden Room Actually Be Used For?

So, what can a new garden room be used for? Maybe you have a idea in mind or maybe you’re not sure what to do with all of the extra space you now have. Perhaps you need some extra space for when you’re working from home, or maybe a place to pursue the new hobby you’ve been thinking about getting into. Do your family need somewhere to stay when they visit, or do your children want a place to hang out with their friends? Are you into fitness but don’t have time to juggle work, family and getting to a gym?

One of the benefits of garden rooms is that most are fully insulated and wired with electrics. So whilst many people may picture a damp, spider-infested shed, the reality is a weather-proof, cosy space that can be used just like a new extension would be.

The possibilities are endless.

Not All Garden Rooms Are Built the Same

Although garden rooms can be a great investment that can add value to your home, not all are built to the same standard and quality so it’s important to do your research and know what you are looking out for. It’s also worth understanding exactly what’s included in the price and how payment is structured. A lower upfront cost doesn’t always reflect the final spend once everything is factored in.

Take a look at your local garden centre, and you will find an array of garden rooms that seem to be perfect for what you are looking for. However, if you take a closer look at what is included, you will tend to find many come as a flat pack with a set of instructions for you to assemble yourself. Whilst this may not seem particularly daunting if you are a hands-on person, it’s worth considering what else may need to be carried out yourself –for example, will there need to be groundworks carried out before? Failure to correctly prepare the site before erecting any building could result in issues further down the line, such as flooding or sinking. Consider the price you are looking at and what is actually included, as more often than not you will end up paying far more for a product that requires much more work.

How We Build Our Garden Rooms

At Elmtree, our garden rooms come with the whole package. From design to build we cover everything so that all you need to do is decide on how to decorate!

We take your design and build each panel individually in our workshop so that when we get to site, we fit and secure your garden room in just a few hours. Every timber frame garden room we produce is built to last, using locally sourced FSC timber and 100mm PIR insulation. This means that regardless of how you choose to use your garden room, it will be comfortable, energy-efficient, and built to last all year round.

We’re lucky to have worked on a wide range of garden rooms from accessible therapy rooms to stilted offices. You may have even seen someof our recent social media posts on our whole process, but if not, we recommend you check them out.

Are Garden Rooms Worth the Investment?

There are many benefits that come from investing in a garden room, far beyond the obvious benefit of extra space.

  • Not having to move -  Many people find they love their home and the area they live in but their home just doesn’t quite have enough space. Finding alternative ways to add space to your home means you don’t have to worry about packing up your life. Instead, a garden room can provide you with a much simpler, long-term solution and give you everything you need without the headache of spending hours searching for a new home and all of the added costs that come with it.
  • Increased property value - Not only can investing in a garden room save you the hassle of moving, but it can also add value to your current home. Recent statistics show that adding a garden room to your home can actually increase property value by 5-10%.
  • Reduced disruption – You may have considered an extension but been put off by the length of time and the amount of disruption it could cause in your home. With a garden room, you don’t need to worry about any of this. As mentioned previously, our garden rooms are all built off-site, which dramatically reduces the amount of time we need to spend at your home. Rather than having to wait weeks or potentially months for an extension, you could have a new garden room in as little as 7 days!

Do You Need Planning Permission?

Garden rooms often fall under permitted development, meaning planning permission isn’t always required. However, there are a few key things to keep in mind before getting started:

  • Permitted Development – In many cases, as long as your garden room is single-storey and no taller than 4m, planning permission won’t be necessary.
  • Usage – Garden rooms are incredibly versatile, but if you plan to use yours as permanent accommodation or list it on platforms like Airbnb, additional permissions may be required.
  • Size – Your garden room must not take up more than 50% of your garden space.

Planning rules can sometimes feel confusing, but our team is here to guide you through the process and support with any applications—so you can move forward with confidence and minimal stress.
